Malamala Beach Club Half Day Pass - Mamanuca Islands, Fiji
Not every visit to Malamala Beach Club needs to be an all-day affair. The half-day pass — 4 hours on the island via South Sea Cruises’ high-speed catamaran — is the lower-commitment entry point to the same private island beach club experience, at a meaningfully lower price than the full-day format. If your morning is already spoken for, or you want to combine Malamala with something else on the same afternoon, the half-day structure makes that possible.
At $78 per person, this is not a budget island trip. Malamala is a premium product, and the half-day pass reflects that. What you’re paying for is access to a purpose-built island beach club — white sand, infinity pool, bar, snorkelling, and non-motorised water sports — in a four-hour window rather than a full day.

Malamala Beach Club — what it is
Malamala Island is a small island in the Mamanuca group, approximately 30 minutes from Port Denarau by catamaran. It markets itself accurately as the world’s first beach club built on its own dedicated island — the entire landmass is the club. There is no resort, no other operator, no public access. When you’re there, everyone on the island is a paying guest of the same venue.
The island is small enough to walk around in well under 20 minutes. On the lagoon side sits the main beach club: a long arc of white sand, the infinity-edge pool, the bar and kitchen, beach loungers, and the entry point for snorkelling. On the far side is “The Venue” — an adults-only area (16+ years) with its own pool, bar, and dining. Guests on the half-day pass can access both areas.
The atmosphere sits somewhere between a Bali beach club and a Pacific island day trip. The design is polished, the bar is well-stocked, and the setting — Mamanuca blue water in every direction — is genuinely hard to fault.
What four hours allows
Four hours is enough time to: settle in and secure a beach position, do a snorkel session, spend time at the pool, and have a leisurely drink and something to eat before the return ferry. It is not enough time to do all of that at an unhurried pace, and guests who arrive expecting to do everything risk feeling rushed.
The most effective approach on the half-day format is to decide your priority before you arrive — pool or snorkelling or beach — and anchor your time there. Four hours on a premium island with a clear focus is a genuinely good afternoon; four hours spent trying to cover every option is a more hurried version of the same.
One consistent note from guests with experience at Malamala: arrive early and move directly to secure your preferred pool position. The main infinity pool is in high demand, particularly in peak season. On the full-day format, guests on the early catamaran have a clear advantage. Half-day guests on an afternoon session should be aware that the best positions may already be taken by full-day guests who arrived in the morning.
What’s included
- Return high-speed catamaran transfers (Port Denarau to Malamala Island)
- Return coach transfers from most Nadi, Denarau, Wailoaloa, and Vuda hotels
- Island access for 4 hours
- One towel per person (additional towels available for FJD $5 each)
- Use of snorkelling gear
- Non-motorised water sports: kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (subject to availability)
- Complimentary Wi-Fi on the island
What’s not included: food, drinks, and upgrades
Food and drinks are purchased via a TAB card issued at check-in. You charge everything to the tab throughout your visit and settle the balance — by card or cash — before the return ferry departs. No outside food or alcohol is permitted on the island.
The kitchen serves Pacific-inspired food across a range of price points: light bites through to sharing platters and mains. The bar carries cocktails, Fiji craft beer, wine, and non-alcoholic options. Prices are beach-club pricing — not exorbitant, but not supermarket pricing either. Budget accordingly for the experience you want.
Optional upgrades — Poolside Day Bed, Beachside Cabana (with butler service), and the Grand Cabana formats — are available and can be booked in advance or on arrival, subject to availability. If a day bed or cabana is important to your experience, booking at the same time as your pass is the safer option. On a half-day with limited time on the island, having a defined base to return to is more useful than on a full day where you have time to drift.
The boat transfer
South Sea Cruises operates the catamaran service from Port Denarau. The vessel is high-speed and air-conditioned, with open-air decks. The crossing takes approximately 30 minutes each way. At Port Denarau, check in at the South Sea Cruises counter in the Passenger Terminal before your departure time.
Your coach pickup time is not the same as your ferry departure time. If you’re using hotel transfers, South Sea Cruises needs to confirm your pickup details at least 24 hours before travel. Your coach will pick you up earlier than the ferry’s listed departure — this is standard across South Sea Cruises itineraries and is not specific to this product.
Half-day vs full-day: choosing the right format
The full-day Malamala pass suits guests who want to do Malamala properly without time pressure — morning catamaran, full day on the island, return in the afternoon, all activities at a comfortable pace. The full-day format also extends hotel transfer availability to Coral Coast accommodation.
The half-day pass at $78 suits:
- Guests who only have a morning or afternoon free on a given day
- Guests combining Malamala with another activity on the same day
- Those who want the Malamala experience but aren’t ready to commit to a full day
- First-time visitors who want to see the island before booking a longer return visit
If you’re able to spend a full day and the budget is close, the full-day format gives you more time for the same facilities. The half-day pass earns its place for guests where time or flexibility is the deciding factor.
There is also a Malamala helicopter day trip (product 56430P25, $414) for guests who want the scenic flight approach rather than the catamaran crossing — an entirely different product at a very different price.
Practical notes
Reef footwear: the sand at Malamala contains coral pieces in places. Reef shoes or water socks make beach and water-edge movement more comfortable, particularly for children and anyone prone to foot sensitivity.
Snorkel gear fit: the island provides gear, but if you’re particular about mask seal or fin fit, bringing your own well-fitted mask is worth considering.
TAB card balance: settle your TAB card before the return ferry — the crew will remind you, but don’t leave it until the last five minutes. Being queued at the settlement desk when your ferry is boarding is an avoidable stress.
Weather: Malamala operates in all conditions, but adverse weather may restrict water activities. Full refunds apply if South Sea Cruises cancels the service.
Reviews context: at 4.3 / 5 across 128 reviews, Malamala performs consistently well. Guest experience here correlates closely with expectation management — the venue is polished and the setting is beautiful, but it is a pay-as-you-go food and drink model in a beach-club environment, not an all-inclusive island package. Guests who arrive understanding that tend to leave very happy.
FAQs
How does the half-day pass compare to the full-day pass?
The full-day pass gives you approximately 5.5–6 hours on the island at a higher price point, plus access to Coral Coast hotel transfers. The half-day pass at $78 gives you 4 hours with the same facilities, suited to guests with tighter schedules or a preference for a shorter commitment.
Is Malamala suitable for families with children?
Yes. The main beach area is family-friendly. The adults-only area (The Venue, 16+) is separately designated. There is no structured kids club, so it is more of a natural beach day than an activities programme for young children.
Can I book a cabana with the half-day pass?
Cabana and day-bed upgrades are available to all guests including half-day pass holders. Given the shorter time on the island, having a defined base is arguably more useful — book in advance rather than hoping for availability on the day.
What’s the cancellation policy?
Full refund if cancelled at least 24 hours before the start date.
Operated by South Sea Cruises. Check in at the South Sea Cruises counter, Passenger Terminal, Port Denarau. Contact South Sea Cruises at least 24 hours before travel to confirm hotel pickup times. Food and drinks are not included — all purchases on the island are made via TAB card.
