Malamala Beach Club is a legitimate claim to a superlative: the world’s first beach club built on its own dedicated island, approximately 30 minutes from Port Denarau by high-speed catamaran through the Mamanuca Islands. The island is small enough to walk around in under 20 minutes, large enough to not feel crowded on a normal day, and the facilities — infinity-edge pool, beachside cabanas, water sports equipment, South Pacific–inspired à la carte food, and a well-stocked cocktail bar — are genuinely polished for a day-trip experience.

The full-day pass suits guests who want to do this properly: spend a morning on the water, arrive at a premium island venue, eat well, drink well, snorkel, and come back in the late afternoon without having rushed anything.

At a glance

  • Ferry departs Port Denarau: 9:30am (Nadi/Denarau guests); 10:00am (Coral Coast guests)
  • Return ferry options: 4:15pm (recommended for Coral Coast guests who need to connect with their coach); 5:15pm (available for Vuda guests); Nadi/Denarau guests can take either
  • Island time (full day): approximately 5.5–6 hours
  • Transfers: return coach transfers from Nadi, Denarau, Wailoaloa, and Vuda hotels (Full Day); plus Natadola, Sonaisali, Momi Bay, and Coral Coast hotels for Full Day bookings
  • Operated by: South Sea Cruises
  • Contact South Sea Cruises at least 24 hours before your activity date to confirm and arrange transport

What’s included

  • Return high-speed catamaran ferry from Port Denarau
  • Return coach transfers from most Nadi, Denarau, Wailoaloa, Vuda hotels (all formats); Natadola, Sonaisali, Momi Bay, and Coral Coast hotels on Full Day bookings
  • Use of non-motorised water sports equipment: snorkelling gear, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards (subject to availability)
  • One towel per person (additional towels available for FJD $5 each or bring your own)
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi (may be slower on busy days)

What’s not included

Food and drinks are purchased separately using a TAB card issued at check-in. You place all purchases on the tab throughout the day and settle it — by card, cash, or debit card — before the return ferry. The kitchen and bar are open all day.

The menu runs from Pacific-inspired light bites to sharing platters and main courses, with cocktails, Fiji craft beer, and a full wine list. No outside food or alcohol is permitted on the island.

The island itself

Malamala is small by island standards: a long crescent of white sand, a main beach club facility on the lagoon side, and “The Venue” adults-only area (16+ years) on the other side with its own infinity pool, dining area, and bar.

The main pool is the infinity-edge pool with views across the Mamanucas. It’s the most photographed feature of the island and the most in-demand seating on busy days — arriving early and securing a spot matters. A reviewer noted that on a busy half-day session, the main pool was at capacity on arrival and nobody left for four hours. Full-day guests arriving on the 9:30am ferry have the best chance at prime pool positions.

Snorkelling is directly off the island’s beach. The surrounding reef and Malamala Island itself form a protected site. Visibility and marine life quality vary by conditions and season; gear is provided, but bringing your own well-fitted mask is recommended if you’re particular about fit.

Optional upgrades (paid at booking or on arrival):

  • Poolside Day Bed (1–2 people): prime position at the main infinity pool
  • Beachside Cabana with butler service (1–2 people)
  • Grand Cabana with butler service (3–8 people)
  • Grand Deluxe Cabana (8–20 people)
  • Island massage

If a cabana or daybed is important to your experience, book it at the time of purchasing your day pass rather than hoping for availability on the day.

Practical notes

Footwear: the beach at Malamala has some coarse coral sand and shell pieces — reef shoes or water socks are recommended. The island’s own FAQ mentions this directly.

Returnee rate: guests who loved the day and want to return within 7 days pay a reduced returnee rate (FJD $99 per person as of recent listings). Present your original day pass at check-in.

Wet weather: Malamala operates in all weather conditions but can cancel water activities or restrict certain areas in adverse weather. Full refunds apply if South Sea Cruises cancels the service.

Credit card fee: bookings paid by international credit or debit card incur a 2.5–3% non-refundable administration fee. Infants under 3 are free but must be advised at booking; children 4+ pay adult rate.

FAQs

Is Malamala good for families with young children?

Yes, with caveats. The island is small and easy to navigate, and the shallow beach entry is calm. There’s no kids club or structured children’s activities, so it’s more of a “beach day” than an entertainment day for young children. Families with older children tend to enjoy it more fully.

Is this worth the premium over a standard island day cruise?

Malamala costs more than a typical island day trip and the experience is meaningfully different: you’re at a purpose-built beach club with a bar, cabanas, and quality food rather than a resort’s guest day-trip facilities. Guests who prioritize beach-club aesthetics, good cocktails, and a premium social atmosphere find it outstanding value; guests expecting budget-style island day-trip pricing are sometimes surprised. Reviews are consistently positive when guests know what they’re buying.
