Yasawa Wanderer: 8-Day Island Hopping Package (Transfers, Accommodation & Activities)
The Yasawa Wanderer is Awesome Adventures Fiji’s flagship 8-day island-hopping package — the one people refer to when they talk about “doing the Yasawas properly.” It covers 4 islands across 3 regions, includes all vessel and coach transfers, accommodation, a curated set of activities, and a bonus Malamala Beach Club day pass to use before or after your island segment.
The value is in the logistics: Yasawa island-hopping involves coordinating boat schedules, resort availability, activity timings, and the Yasawa Flyer route across more than 20 island stops. This package handles all of it. You choose Dorm or Bure accommodation style, and Awesome Adventures assigns the specific resorts based on availability at booking.
At a glance
- Operator: Awesome Adventures Fiji / South Sea Cruises Group
- Duration: 8 days / 7 nights / 4 islands / 3 regions
- Departs: daily from Port Denarau
- Returns: Port Denarau at 6:00pm on Day 8 (plan to stay in Nadi/Denarau overnight before early flights)
- Accommodation: your choice of Dorm (shared, social, budget) or Bure (private, most with ensuite)
- Meals: NOT included from 01 April 2025 — paid directly at each resort
- Fuel surcharge: FJD $15 per person for Yasawa sectors (separate from package price)
The 3 regions and what happens there
Region 1 — Yasawa Gateway (Night 1 + Nights 6–7)
The southernmost Yasawa region, accessible after roughly 2–3 hours on the Yasawa Flyer from Denarau. You’ll spend your first night here getting oriented, and return for the final two nights at the end of the trip (at the other Gateway resort from your first stay).
Possible resorts: Octopus Resort or Barefoot Kuata Island Resort (confirmed at booking based on availability).
Activities included (based on confirmed resort):
- Octopus Resort: Guided Night Snorkel or Guided Mountain Hike
- Barefoot Kuata: Guided Snorkelling with Reef Sharks or Guided Night Snorkel
Day 7 activity: If staying at Barefoot Kuata on the return segment, you snorkel with reef sharks — White Tip and Black Tip Reef Sharks at a site 4–6 metres deep. Multiple reviewers specifically recommend trading in the reef snorkel voucher at Kuata and upgrading to the bull shark dive (Awakening Shark Dive) at additional cost — described by guests who do it as “a once in a lifetime experience” and the highlight of their entire trip.
Region 2 — Blue Lagoon (Nights 2–3)
The iconic central Yasawa region, approximately 4–5 hours north of Denarau. The Blue Lagoon area is known for its dramatic island scenery, clear shallow lagoons, and beach settings. This is where the Sawa-i-Lau Caves excursion operates.
Possible resorts: Oarsmans Bay Lodge, Blue Lagoon Beach Resort, or Coconut Beach Resort (based on availability).
Day 3 activity — Sawa-i-Lau Caves: The Sawa-i-Lau Caves are limestone caverns that can only be accessed by swimming through a partially submerged passage into an inner chamber — cool, dark, and completely unlike anything accessible on the main island. The excursion involves a short boat trip from your resort. Caves do not operate on Sundays — if Day 3 of your itinerary falls on a Sunday, an alternative activity is substituted.
The caves are one of the most consistently memorable stops across all Yasawa package reviews. One reviewer described it as “surreal — you swim into another world.”
Region 3 — Manta Ray Region (Nights 4–5)
The northern Yasawa resort area known for manta ray encounters. Approximately 4–5 hours north of Denarau.
Possible resorts: Mantaray Island Resort or Barefoot Manta Island (confirmed at booking).
Day 5 activity:
- May–October: Swim with Manta Rays — snorkelling in open water alongside giant oceanic mantas. Manta rays are wild animals and encounters depend on their seasonal presence; most visits in peak months result in sightings.
- November–April: Guided Reef Snorkelling at sites near the resort — some of the best reef snorkelling in the Yasawa chain.
Note on Barefoot Manta: Some reviews mention inconsistencies around included activities at this property specifically. If you experience issues with your included activity not being honoured, contact Awesome Adventures Fiji directly (hotline: +679 675 0499) to resolve — other guests have successfully had activities reinstated by doing this.
Bonus: Malamala Beach Club day pass
Included with the package. Malamala Beach Club is a private island beach club 25 minutes from Port Denarau — day beds, infinity pool, food and drink service. Use this before you depart for the Yasawas (a luxurious first day in Fiji) or on return (a soft landing back to civilisation before heading home).
Pre-book your Malamala date before arriving in Fiji to secure availability.
Malamala day pass includes:
- Return catamaran transfers to/from Port Denarau
- Resort entry
- Free use of non-motorised watersports equipment
- Free Wi-Fi
- Free towel service
Meals — important note
From 01 April 2025, meals are NOT included in this package. Meal costs are paid directly at each resort upon check-in, or pre-paid to Awesome Adventures at the time of booking.
In the Yasawa Islands, most resorts operate a meal plan (breakfast/lunch/dinner) because there are no restaurants or shops nearby. This is not optional — it’s built into resort operations. Budget for a meal plan at each of your 4 resorts in addition to the package price.
Some resorts accept card; most prefer cash. Bring sufficient FJD cash — there are no ATMs in the Yasawa Islands. The closest ATMs are at Nadi Airport, Nadi town, and Port Denarau.

Choosing Dorm vs Bure
Dorm: Shared sleeping space and bathrooms with other travellers. Social, budget-friendly. Minimum age 18. Single travellers typically book dorms.
Bure: Private room, most with ensuite. More peaceful, higher cost. Required for families with children under 18 and for couples wanting privacy.
Single travellers booking a Bure will be charged a single supplement — Awesome Adventures cannot match solo travellers to share Bure accommodation.
Planning and booking tips
Book early for peak season (July–August). Yasawa resort capacity is limited and the most popular properties fill up well in advance.
Confirm travel dates at least 14 days before arrival in Fiji so Awesome Adventures can secure resort availability. Passes and packages can be booked on an open-dated basis.
Resorts may change based on availability. The operator assigns you to one of the listed resorts per region — the specific resort is confirmed at booking. Occasionally resorts are substituted for equivalents; the activity inclusions adjust accordingly.
Each boat sector must be reserved at least 24 hours before travel — do this at the Travel Desk on the Yasawa Flyer or by calling +679 675 0499.
Practical realities from past travellers
Airport pickup: have your confirmation details and the operator contact clearly accessible. A few reviews mention confusion on airport arrival day — having the Awesome Adventures booking reference and hotline number (+679 675 0499) visible on your phone means any logistics issue is resolved in minutes rather than causing unnecessary stress.
The final day return: the boat arrives at Port Denarau at 6:00pm. The coach to Nadi Airport and Wailoaloa departs at approximately 6:15pm. If you’re flying the following morning, stay in Nadi/Denarau that night. Do not book a flight that requires you to arrive at the airport before 8:00pm on your final package day.
Connectivity: Wi-Fi is limited or absent at many Yasawa resorts, particularly in the northern islands. Plan to go offline. Download maps, guidebooks, and anything else you need before you leave Denarau.
Captain’s Lounge: the upgrade (37-seat lounge with complimentary drinks and attendant service) is worth considering for the longer northbound legs — the 5-hour run to the top of the Yasawas is notably more comfortable in the Lounge. Available at check-in based on availability.
FAQs
Will I definitely swim with manta rays?
Manta encounters are seasonal (May–October) and depend on wildlife presence. The operator has a high success rate during peak months but cannot guarantee sightings. Outside the season, guided reef snorkelling is the included alternative — the reef sites near the Manta Ray Region are among the best in the Yasawa chain regardless of manta presence.
What if I want to extend?
Passes can be extended during travel (before expiry) at the Travel Desk on the Yasawa Flyer by paying the price difference. If you want to stay at a particular island for longer, communicate this to the Awesome Adventures team early.
Is this suitable for older travellers or those who aren’t backpackers?
Yes, particularly in Bure accommodation. The package is marketed toward independent travellers but the activity schedule is unhurried and the resorts are relaxed. Most Yasawa resorts accommodate a wide range of ages.
Meals NOT included from 01 April 2025 — paid at each resort. Fuel surcharge FJD $15 per person for Yasawa sectors. Sawa-i-Lau Caves: Mon–Sat only. Manta rays: May–Oct only, alternative reef snorkel year-round. Final day return to Denarau at 6:00pm — plan overnight in Nadi if flying next morning. Hotline: +679 675 0499.
