The Yasawa Islands Explorer Cruise is a full-day sightseeing experience aboard the Yasawa Flyer catamaran. You depart Port Denarau in the morning, travel north through the Mamanuca Islands and up the Yasawa chain, then return south to Denarau — watching the island scenery all day, with a packed lunch included.

Before booking, the most important thing to understand about this experience:

You stay on the boat. There is no island disembarkation, no snorkelling stop, and no beach time. The Yasawa Flyer operates as a scheduled island-route catamaran that stops at resort jetties to load and unload passengers — on this sightseeing cruise, you remain on board at all stops and observe the islands from the water.

If this matches what you want — the Yasawa scenery in a single day without an overnight commitment — it’s a genuinely spectacular route. If you want beach, reef, swimming, or activity time, you’ll be better served by a different product: a dedicated island day cruise, the Bula Pass, or an overnight island stay.

The Yasawa Flyer

The Yasawa Flyer II is a high-speed catamaran with capacity for 259 passengers across three decks:

  • Standard indoor lounge: air-conditioned seating, travel desk, onboard shop
  • Captain’s Lounge (upgrade, not included): 37 seats, complimentary drinks, dedicated attendant
  • Outdoor decks: uncovered, open-air seating on upper and outer areas

The boat travels at speed — on open water between islands, this is an efficient catamaran transit, not a slow sail. The outdoor deck provides the best views but also the most sun and wind; the indoor lounge is comfortable if you want a calmer ride.

The route and what you’ll see

The Yasawa Flyer’s route travels northwest from Port Denarau through the Mamanuca Islands (passing South Sea Island, several known resort islands, and the rugged profile of Monuriki — the Cast Away island), then up through the southern Yasawa chain toward the Blue Lagoon area and beyond.

The Yasawa Islands are volcanic in origin — dramatic, steep-ridged, with narrow white-sand beaches against dark basalt hillsides. From the water, the visual contrast between the cobalt ocean, reef lines visible in the shallows, and the island silhouettes is striking, particularly in the late morning and early afternoon light.

The complete northbound run to the top of the Yasawas takes approximately 5 hours. On the explorer cruise, the boat turns around and heads south before reaching the final stops, so the total time and northernmost point you reach will depend on the specific departure.

Resort stops are made for loading and unloading other passengers — you remain seated on the vessel during these pauses. They’re a natural break and often the best opportunity to observe island resort settings up close from the water.

Lunch

A packed lunch is included. Additional snacks and drinks are available for purchase at the bar (card payments only — the vessel operates cashless).

What this cruise is and isn’t

Good fit if you:

  • Want to see the Yasawa Islands visually in a single day without overnight travel
  • Enjoy scenic boat journeys and are content with the water as your viewing platform
  • Are interested in the route as context before (or after) a different island experience
  • Have limited time and want a broad impression of the island chain

Not a good fit if you:

  • Want beach time, snorkelling, or swimming
  • Want to disembark at any island
  • Are expecting a “cruise experience” with activities or entertainment
  • Are sensitive to long days on a fast catamaran (approximately 9 hours total)

Motion sickness note

The Yasawa Flyer travels at speed through open Pacific water. If you’re sensitive to vessel motion, take medication before departure. Indoor seating is generally more stable than the outer decks in choppy conditions.

Coach transfers

Complimentary scheduled coach transfers are included from most Nadi, Denarau, and Wailoaloa hotels and resorts. These must be pre-booked at least 24 hours ahead of departure. Coaches pick up from hotels approximately 75 minutes before the vessel departs.

Check in at the South Sea Cruises counter in the Port Denarau passenger terminal at least 30 minutes before the 8:45am departure.

Optional Captain’s Lounge upgrade

The Captain’s Lounge seats 37 passengers and includes complimentary drinks and dedicated attendant service throughout the voyage. This can be booked and paid at check-in on the day (subject to availability). Some passengers find the additional comfort worthwhile for a 9-hour day.

What to bring

  • Motion sickness medication (if prone — take before departure)
  • Hat and sunscreen for outdoor deck time
  • Light jacket or layer (the air-conditioned lounge can be cool; the return sail in the late afternoon can be breezy)
  • Water bottle and snacks (supplementing the included lunch)
  • Camera or phone — the Yasawa scenery is exceptional from the water
  • Card for onboard purchases (cashless vessel — no cash accepted)
  • Sunglasses with a strap (outdoor deck is windy)

FAQs

Can we get off at any island?

No. This is a stay-on-the-boat sightseeing cruise. If you want to disembark and stay at an island, book the Bula Pass or an individual island day cruise instead.

Can we snorkel?

No. There are no snorkelling stops on this cruise.

Is the scenery worth a full day on the boat?

The Yasawa chain is genuinely beautiful from the water. Travellers who understand the format and want the visual experience of the island route consistently describe the day as worthwhile. Travellers who expected beach or activity time find it long and disappointing.

Can I do this and then go back to the Yasawas overnight later?

Yes — the sightseeing cruise is a good way to preview the island chain before committing to an overnight Bula Pass trip.
