The Bula Pass is the standard way to island-hop through Fiji’s Yasawa Islands independently. You buy a multi-day transfer pass, book your own accommodation at island resorts along the route, and board the Yasawa Flyer catamaran each time you want to move. No per-sector booking fees, no last-minute transport panic — your transfers are pre-paid for the duration of the pass.

It covers all stops on the Yasawa Flyer route through the Yasawa Islands plus South Sea Island in the Mamanucas. If you want to move between multiple Yasawa resorts at your own pace over 5–15 days, this is the tool for it.

How the Yasawa Flyer works

The Yasawa Flyer is a high-speed catamaran with capacity for 259 passengers across three decks: an air-conditioned standard lounge (with a travel desk and shop), a Captain’s Lounge (37 seats, complimentary drinks, attendant service — available as an upgrade, not included in the Bula Pass), and outdoor seating areas. It departs Port Denarau every morning at 8:45am, travels north through the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands stopping at resort jetties, reaches the northernmost stop at Nacula (approximately 5 hours from Denarau), then turns south and returns, arriving back at Denarau around 6:00pm.

The complete northbound journey from Denarau to the top of the Yasawas takes about 5 hours. Most resort stops are 2–3 hours from Denarau; the Blue Lagoon area is roughly 4–5 hours. Each day, the boat passes almost every island twice — once northbound in the morning, once southbound in the afternoon.

How the Bula Pass works

Before travel:

  • Book your pass on an open-dated basis if unsure of exact dates, but confirm your final travel dates at least 14 days before arrival in Fiji to ensure resort availability
  • Book island accommodation either before departure or at the Travel Desk on the Yasawa Flyer as you go
  • Pre-book complimentary coach transfers from your Nadi/Denarau/Wailoaloa hotel at least 24 hours ahead of your departure

Activation and use:

  • Pass activates on your first day of travel and runs for the number of consecutive days purchased
  • One sector (one island hop) per day maximum
  • Each sector must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance of disembarking — do this at the Travel Desk on board or by calling the Awesome Hotline: +679 675 0499
  • Resort accommodation must be booked before you disembark at any island — you cannot arrive unannounced

Critical rule: once you return to Port Denarau, your pass becomes invalid for any further use. If you’re planning a multi-leg trip (e.g., go to Yasawas, return to Nadi for a night, then go again), the pass won’t work for the second leg. Plan accordingly.

Extending a pass: possible during travel (before expiry) at the Travel Desk or via the hotline — pay the price difference to upgrade to a longer duration.

Coach transfers

Complimentary scheduled coach transfers from most Nadi, Denarau, Wailoaloa hotels/resorts and Nadi Airport to Port Denarau are included with the pass. These must be pre-booked. The free bus from Nadi Airport departs at 6:50am (for the 8:45am vessel). Confirm your specific hotel pickup time when pre-booking.

Some travelers with tight morning schedules prefer to arrange their own taxi to Port Denarau rather than use the scheduled coach — particularly if their hotel pickup is early or the coach route has many stops.

Fuel surcharge

A fuel surcharge applies for all Yasawa Island resort transfers. Current rate:

  • Awesome Adventures Fiji Pass customers: FJD $15 per person
  • Payable at check-in

Yasawa Islands: what you can do there

The Yasawa chain runs approximately 80km northwest from the main island. Common stops include:

  • Kuata Island (Barefoot Kuata): reef sharks, shark snorkelling (day trip from Denarau or overnight)
  • Drawaqa Island (Mantaray/Barefoot Manta): manta ray snorkelling, seasonal May–October
  • Nanuya Lailai: the Blue Lagoon, local village vibe
  • Nacula: village visits, Sawa-i-Lau limestone caves (boat excursion from nearby resorts)
  • Waya: mountain hike with sunrise viewpoint
  • Multiple other resorts: ranging from budget dorms to mid-range bures

The Bula Pass is particularly well-suited for budget and mid-range travellers who want to move between 2–5 islands over a week or two. Minimum age for shared bathroom accommodation (dorms) is 18 years — guests 17 and under are not permitted in dorm room categories and must book private room types.

Bonus add-ons (reduced price for Bula Pass holders)

At time of booking, pass holders can add:

  • Malamala Beach Club day pass: FJD $99 per person (normally FJD $179) — use before or after your island segment
  • South Sea Sailing full-day experience (SABRE): FJD $199 per person including lunch and drinks (normally FJD $259)

These are good-value additions if you want a Denarau-based day experience around your island trip.

Practical tips for island hopping with the Bula Pass

Pack light. Soft bags or backpacks are easier on boats and in smaller resort accommodation than hard-shell suitcases. Most island resorts don’t have bellhop service.

Cash for the islands. ATMs don’t exist on most Yasawa islands. Bring enough FJD cash for meals not covered by resort plans, activities, tips, and personal spending. Estimate how much you’ll need per day and bring more than you think — you can’t get more once you’re out there.

Meal plans at resorts. Most Yasawa resorts require a meal plan because there are limited or no alternative dining options on the island. Factor this into your budget — it’s typically not included in the Bula Pass price.

Motion sickness. The Yasawa Flyer is a fast catamaran and open-water conditions can be choppy. If you’re prone to seasickness, take medication before departure. The indoor air-conditioned lounge is typically more stable than outdoor deck seating.

Reef shoes. Many Yasawa island landings and snorkel sites involve coral and rocky terrain. Reef shoes are among the most practical items you can pack.

Buffer before flying home. Build at least a full day between your final island departure and your departing flight. Weather and operational issues can delay or cancel services — arriving at Port Denarau with a tight flight window is a common stress point for island-hoppers.

Stay informed. In adverse weather, services can be suspended. Monitor South Sea Cruises communications and have your hotline number saved: +679 675 0499.

What’s NOT included in the Bula Pass

  • Accommodation at any island resort
  • Meals at resorts (usually payable directly to each resort)
  • Captain’s Lounge upgrade
  • Fuel surcharge (FJD $15 per person for Yasawa sectors — paid at check-in)
  • Activities on the islands
  • Any travel past the pass expiry date (normal fares apply)

FAQs

Can I book accommodation as I go rather than in advance?

You can book at the Travel Desk on the Yasawa Flyer — but popular resorts fill up, especially in peak season (July–August). The operator recommends confirming travel dates at least 14 days before arrival and resorts before that where possible.

Can I use the pass to go back and forth between islands?

You can hop as many times as the pass duration allows (one sector per day), but once you return to Port Denarau the pass becomes invalid. Plan your full itinerary to start and end at the same point — or end your pass while still at an island and arrange a final one-way return.

What if I want to stay somewhere for 4–5 nights?

That’s common and works fine. You simply don’t use your daily sector while at that island — your pass keeps running, you stay put, and you hop again when ready. Staying at one island for multiple nights is the standard way many people use the pass.

One sector per day maximum. Each sector must be reserved 24 hours ahead. Pass invalid once you return to Port Denarau. FJD $15 fuel surcharge applies on Yasawa sectors. Cashless vessel — bring a card. Hotline: +679 675 0499. Minimum age 18 for shared-bathroom (dorm) accommodation.
