Kuata Island in the southern Yasawa Islands is where you come to snorkel with reef sharks. Not from a cage, not from a distance — you enter the water at a reef site 4–6 metres deep and swim alongside White Tip and Black Tip Reef Sharks under the continuous guidance of a team that has spent hundreds of hours in the water with this specific resident shark population.

This full-day trip departs Port Denarau at 8:45am daily, travels the Yasawa Flyer catamaran route for 1 hour 45 minutes to Barefoot Kuata Island Resort, and gives you approximately 5 hours on the island — shark snorkel, buffet lunch, beach time, kayaking, SUP, and the natural beauty of a southern Yasawa island that most Fiji visitors never reach.

Plan for a full 9-hour day from hotel departure to return.

Arrival at Kuata: safety briefing first

On arrival at Barefoot Kuata, you’ll be welcomed by resort staff with a bula song and a fresh tropical drink, then given a briefing on the resort layout and the day’s schedule. The shark snorkel has its own dedicated safety briefing before entering the water — covering body positioning, hand signals, and how to behave around sharks.

The shark snorkel

The guides who conduct this experience have spent hundreds of hours getting to know the resident shark population at this specific site. They’re in the water with you throughout, actively monitoring shark behaviour and managing group positioning.

The sharks: White Tip Reef Sharks are the primary species — naturally inquisitive and unafraid of approaching snorkellers at close range. Black Tips are also commonly encountered. Both species are tropical reef sharks that typically grow to just over 1.5 metres. Multiple reviewers note they appear significantly larger underwater — the face mask creates a 25% optical enlargement effect. Most guests describe their reaction as: initially startled, then surprisingly calm.

If you’re not a confident swimmer: buoyancy aids (life jackets) are available. Many guests who describe themselves as weak swimmers complete the snorkel using a life jacket without difficulty.

A typical session involves 5–6 sharks and 45+ minutes of reef time, with the ability to swim along the reef edge and observe the broader ecosystem alongside the sharks.

After the snorkel: 5 hours on Barefoot Kuata

Lunch is served at the resort restaurant between 12:00–14:00. After that, the afternoon is yours:

  • Snorkelling from the beach (good snorkelling directly off the sand)
  • Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (included)
  • Swimming pool
  • Bush walk
  • Simply sitting on a southern Yasawa island beach with no obligations

Barefoot Kuata has an authentic resort feel — wooden bures, genuine beach, and a team that’s known for being warm and genuinely enthusiastic about their island. Multiple reviewers describe the staff as the highlight of the visit beyond the sharks.

The honest time commitment

This is a 9-hour day from hotel departure to return. The catamaran is the scheduled Yasawa Flyer service, which stops at multiple resorts. You’re on a ferry route, not a private charter. Some guests find the travel time long relative to the shark snorkel window; others enjoy the island-hopping nature of the crossing.

Set expectations accordingly and the day delivers. If you go expecting a “quick 30-minute boat to the reef,” you’ll find the day longer than anticipated.

FAQs

Will I definitely see sharks?

The experience is specifically designed around a resident shark population at a known site. Most guests see multiple sharks, often at close range. Wildlife cannot be 100% guaranteed — but this is the most consistent shark-snorkel offering in Fiji.

Is it safe?

Consistently described by guests as well-managed and safe. The guides are experienced with this specific animal population and monitor behaviour continuously. Follow the briefing instructions and you’ll be fine.

What species are they — are they dangerous?

White Tip and Black Tip Reef Sharks are the primary species. These are tropical reef sharks, not the open-ocean species associated with attacks on humans. They’re inquisitive by nature. Your guide has spent hundreds of hours in the water with them.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

No. Buoyancy aids are available and multiple guests who describe themselves as weak swimmers complete the snorkel with a life jacket.
