South Sea Island Half-Day Cruise: Snorkel, Semi-Sub & BBQ from Denarau
South Sea Island is the most popular day-trip island in Fiji — and the half-day version is the answer to “I want the island experience but I’d also like a slow morning.” You depart Port Denarau at 12:15pm, spend the afternoon on an uninhabited Mamanuca island with snorkelling, a semi-submersible coral tour, swimming, and a BBQ lunch, then return by 6:00pm.
The island is only 30 minutes from Denarau by high-speed catamaran, which means you don’t sacrifice much time to transit. The experience is well-packaged and genuinely popular with families because most things are included — you arrive, put your stuff down, and the afternoon just happens.

What to do on South Sea Island
Snorkelling
The reef around South Sea Island is accessible even at low tide — this is specifically called out by the operator and guests, and it matters. Most snorkel-accessible islands require high tide for decent water depth. Here, you can get in regardless of when you arrive.
Snorkel gear is complimentary. Staff provide a guided snorkel tour for an included time window; after that you can continue independently.
Semi-submersible coral viewer
The Subsea Adventure is a seated, dry viewing experience on a small semi-submersible vessel that travels over the reef at low depth. You look through glass windows at the coral and fish below without getting wet. Good option for guests who don’t want to snorkel, younger children, and anyone who wants to observe without the exertion.
Note: the semi-sub is subject to maintenance and weather. In the event it’s not operating, no refund is issued for this specific component.
Saltwater pool
There’s a saltwater pool on the island — popular with families who prefer the pool to open-water snorkelling, and useful for young children who aren’t confident in the sea.
SUP boards and kayaks
Non-motorised watersports are complimentary. Both paddleboards and kayaks are available for use during your island time.
Lunch and cultural performance (except Sundays)
Lunch is the centrepiece of the island day. BBQ buffet with salads, fresh fruit, and the complimentary drinks bar. From Monday to Saturday, this is accompanied by a traditional Fijian Meke dance performance — guests consistently describe this as a highlight. Sundays: no Meke and no craft market.
Children’s policy
- Children 0–4 years: free (must be advised at booking)
- Children 5–15 years: child rate
- Kids Club for ages 3–12 included
- Children under adult supervision at all times
Optional extras (additional cost)
- Island massage
- Premium bar (beyond the complimentary beer, wine, and soft drinks)
- Scuba diving (available until 31 March 2026 — introductory and certified options)
The reef around South Sea Island includes a purposefully sunk shipwreck, drop-offs, and wall dives with hard corals and schooling fish — good for certified divers as well as first-timers.
Hotel transfer notes
Half-day transfers are included from Nadi, Denarau, and Wailoaloa hotels. If you’re staying at a Coral Coast, Natadola, Sonaisali, or Momi Bay property, you’ll need to arrange your own transport to Port Denarau (or upgrade to the full-day option, which includes these transfers).
Air-conditioned coaches pick up from your hotel approximately 75 minutes before departure time.
Online check-in is available 24 hours before travel via the South Sea Cruises website — this lets you go straight to the wristband counter at Port Denarau rather than queuing at the kiosk.

FAQs
How long is actually spent on the island?
On the half-day, the catamaran departs Denarau at 12:15pm, the island is approximately 30 minutes away, and the return arrives at 6:00pm. You’ll have roughly 3.5–4 hours on the island itself.
Is half a day enough?
Multiple reviewers specifically say “half a day is plenty.” The island is small and the activities are all accessible within that window. A full-day option exists if you want more time.
Is it good for non-swimmers?
Yes. The semi-submersible, the pool, and the beach setting all work for people who don’t snorkel. Bring a good book.
What if the weather is bad?
In adverse weather or rough sea conditions, water-based activities including snorkelling, paddleboarding, kayaking, and the Subsea Adventure may be paused. The island and lunch proceed regardless.
