Fiji Untold is performed by VOU Dance Company — Fiji’s internationally touring contemporary dance and theatre troupe, founded in 2007, now employing over 60 full-time artists. It runs at the VOU Hub on Denarau Road every Thursday and Sunday evening, and it is comfortably the most produced, most ambitious cultural performance available to visitors in Fiji.

This is not a resort meke. The VOU Hub is a 450-seat big-top tent with cinematic lighting, a proper sound system, and a cast that has performed internationally. The show runs for approximately 90 minutes, including a short intermission.

What Fiji Untold is about

The show follows Lagi — daughter of a Fijian chief — who is cast out of her village and plunged into a mythological underworld. She encounters mystical giant women, the Octopus Gods of the vast Fijian ocean, and a shape-shifting iguana spirit adorned with long-lost dance sticks. Her journey is one of self-discovery and rebellion: finding her voice through Fijian dance and contemporary expression.

The narrative draws from researched oral traditions and Fijian mythology. What makes it work as theatre — rather than just as cultural education — is the production quality: the drumming starts immediately and doesn’t let up, the choreography is tight and athletic, the lighting is cinematic, and the cast is young, energetic, and visibly performing from a place of genuine pride.

Multiple reviewers describe the same experience: “I almost skipped it” followed by “this was the best night of the whole trip.”

VOU’s weekly show schedule

VOU runs a different show each night:

DayShow
Wednesday & SaturdayFrom Fiji with Love — multicultural love story
Thursday & SundayFiji Untold — mythology, giants, ocean gods
FridayMystery of the Missing Hat — high-energy comedy

If your dates in Fiji include a Thursday or Sunday, Fiji Untold is the one to book. If not, From Fiji with Love and Mystery of the Missing Hat are strong alternatives — all three are full productions, not reduced programmes.

The social enterprise dimension

VOU is a registered social enterprise. Your ticket directly funds:

  • Full-time employment for 60+ young Fijian artists
  • Accredited tertiary education through the VOU Conservatorium of Dance (giving artists career pathways beyond the stage)

This isn’t marketing language — it’s the operational model. The company was founded specifically to provide sustainable careers in the arts for Fijian youth, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Dinner package

The evening dinner package includes return hotel transfers, a dinner meal, the drumming experience, and the live show. The show-only option (without dinner) is also bookable for guests who prefer to eat elsewhere first.

The VOU-run café and bar remain open for additional drink and snack purchases throughout the evening.

Practical notes

Dress: smart casual. No formal dress code — the tropical climate means comfort is appropriate. Some guests dress up; most don’t.

Insect repellent: the VOU Hub is in a semi-outdoor setting. Multiple sources recommend bringing repellent, particularly in wet season.

Children: the show is engaging for a wide age range. Mystery of the Missing Hat (Fridays) is noted as the most child-specific show; Fiji Untold works well for families but has more intensity in the mythology sequences.

Cancellation policy: full refund if cancelled 24+ hours before the show. Refunds for operator cancellations are processed within 14–21 days.

VOU Shop: merchandise available on-site. Locally made items only.

FAQs

Is this a traditional meke?

No — and VOU doesn’t describe it as one. It’s contemporary Fijian theatre: deeply rooted in Fijian culture and story, but presented with modern choreography, cinematic lighting, and professional production values. Reviewers frequently compare it to Broadway in terms of polish.

Do I need the dinner package?

Not if you prefer to eat at your resort or elsewhere first. The show stands entirely on its own.

Can I participate in the drumming?

Yes — the drumming session before the show includes audience participation. It’s energetic and fun, and you don’t need any prior experience.

Fiji Untold: Thursdays and Sundays, 8:00pm at VOU Hub, Denarau Road, Nadi. Hotel pickups from 5:15pm. Dinner package available. Social enterprise — your ticket funds young Fijian artists’ careers.
