The Navua River flows from the highlands of Viti Levu through deep gorges, native rainforest, and traditional villages before reaching the coast near Pacific Harbour. This full-day adventure tours its best stretch: a motorized longboat up through the most dramatic sections, a jungle trek to a waterfall, bamboo raft back downstream, and a traditional village visit with a kava ceremony, war dance, craft demonstrations, and a lovo-style lunch.

It’s a long day — early start, approximately 5.5 hours of activities, and a 3-hour return drive from Nadi (1.5 hours from Suva). Guests who love it consistently describe it as the most memorable thing they did in Fiji.

The itinerary

Motorized longboat up the Navua River

The boat journey is the setting for everything that follows. The Navua River runs between walls of rainforest, deep basalt gorges, and occasional village clearings — scenery that’s completely different from coastal Fiji and that most visitors never see. Your guide narrates what you’re passing: river ecology, community history, village life along the banks, and the wildlife you’re likely to spot (wild river ducks, white and black herons, and other native birds).

Trek to the waterfall and swim

A short, family-manageable trek through lush tropical vegetation leads to the waterfall. The path is well-maintained — families with children aged 3 and 6 have completed it comfortably — and the destination is a proper cascade into a clear pool. Most guests swim. The cool water is a welcome reset after the journey.

Reef shoes are recommended for the trek and the river entry. The rocks can be slippery.

Bamboo raft downstream

The return section is on a bilibili — a traditional Fijian bamboo raft, still the standard river transport for riverside villages. Floating downstream at a slow pace gives you a completely different relationship with the river: quieter, lower, closer to the water. It’s the moment guests often describe as unexpectedly peaceful.

Fijian village visit

The village component of this tour is the longest and most immersive section. It’s a genuine community welcome, not a staged performance. Activities during the village visit include:

Kava ceremony: A formal sevusevu with elders. Guests participate — receive a bilo (coconut shell cup) of kava, clap once, drink the lot, clap three times. Your guide explains the protocol before you begin.

Fijian war dance: The men of the village perform a traditional war dance. Powerful, rhythmic, and striking. Guests are invited to feel the performance rather than simply observe.

Craft demonstrations: Basket weaving, coconut processing (husking, opening, shredding), and traditional painting. You can watch or try — the hosts are patient and enjoy teaching.

Fijian hospitality: The village host’s role is to make guests feel genuinely welcome. Reviews consistently note this as the part of the day that lingers longest in memory.

Traditional lovo lunch

The final section: a full Fijian meal prepared by village women using lovo cooking (food wrapped in banana leaves, cooked underground in a pit of heated stones). Fish, chicken, meat, root vegetables, tropical fruit, and salad. It’s substantial, fragrant, and distinctly local.

Optional: souvenir shopping from village artisans after lunch. Buying directly supports the community.

Practical notes

The drive from Nadi is long. Three hours each way is a real commitment. Guests who treat the coastal drive as part of the day — rice paddies, cane fields, the transition from Viti Levu’s dry west to its wet southeast — find it part of the experience rather than a problem. Guests who underestimate it are occasionally surprised.

From Suva, this tour is the obvious choice for a proper inland adventure day. The 1.5-hour drive is very manageable.

Children: the waterfall trek is gentle enough for young children. The village activities are consistently described as engaging for kids. The bamboo raft is safe and calm.
