Skydive Fiji - 12,000ft Tandem Jump with 45 Seconds Freefall over Denarau
At 12,000 feet, the Mamanuca Islands look exactly like they do on a map — scattered coral and reef structures, vivid blues graduating from turquoise shallows to deep ocean, the Denarau coastline curving below you. Then the door opens.
Skydive Fiji has been operating from Nadi since 2004 and remains the most experienced skydiving operation in the country. The 12,000ft jump — branded “Extreme” — gives you approximately 45 seconds of freefall at a descent speed of around 200 km/h, followed by the parachute opening and a several-minute float to the landing zone on Denarau Island. Total experience from briefing to landing: about two hours.
It’s designed for first-timers. Everything about the operation is built around someone who has never jumped before: clear explanations, professional tandem instructors, and a process that converts nervous energy into something productive rather than letting it spiral.
Jump options
Skydive Fiji offers four altitude options, each with more freefall time:
- 8,000 feet — entry level, shorter freefall (~20 seconds)
- 10,000 feet — “Radical”, approximately 30 seconds freefall
- 12,000 feet — “Extreme”, approximately 45 seconds freefall
- 14,000 feet — “Legend”, approximately 60 seconds freefall, maximum altitude available
Going higher isn’t scarier — the sensation at 12,000 feet and 14,000 feet is essentially the same during freefall, just longer. The 12,000ft jump is the most popular choice for first-timers who want a substantial freefall without necessarily going to the maximum.
What the experience looks like
Pickup and check-in: Skydive Fiji is located on Denarau Road, just before the Denarau entrance bridge from the Nadi Town side — about 15 minutes from Nadi Airport. Return transfers are available from most Denarau and Nadi-area hotels. If your hotel is outside that zone, you’ll need to arrange your own transport to the office.
Briefing: a safety briefing video, gear fitting, and time with your instructor. This is where most first-timers notice their nerves settling — the process is calm, professional, and systematic. You’re attached to your instructor by harness throughout; from the moment the harness is fitted, you’re never going to be separate from the person who’s done this hundreds of times.
The climb: a 20-minute scenic flight to altitude in a small aircraft. The views on the ascent are already extraordinary — Fiji’s reef systems, the Mamanucas, the green interior of Viti Levu. Reviewers consistently mention that the flight alone is worth attending to, before you’ve even thought about the jump.
Freefall: at 12,000 feet, the door opens. The actual exit is quick — there isn’t really a moment of choice once you’re at the door, which is by design. Freefall is 45 seconds at approximately 200 km/h. The sensation is less like falling and more like being on the surface of a very fast river of air — wind noise, pressure, and the reef and islands visible below. When the parachute opens, the noise stops and the canopy ride begins: quiet, controlled, with a panoramic view of the coast.
Landing: the landing zone is on Denarau Island. Your instructor controls the parachute throughout the canopy phase; your job is to lift your legs for the final approach.
Certificate of attainment: received after landing.
Photo and video packages
Not capturing it is a genuinely common regret. Options from Skydive Fiji:
- Hand Cam (video or stills), USB: FJD $245
- Hand Cam combo (video and stills), USB: FJD $314
- Ultimate Camera Package (hand cam + dedicated outside camera flyer, two angles), USB: FJD $565
The Ultimate Package is the one where a separate camera flyer jumps with you and films from outside. For a once-in-a-lifetime skydive, this is the version worth considering — you get the tandem master’s perspective and the external view of your own body in freefall.
Practical notes
Weight: minimum 50kg, maximum 115kg. A surcharge applies for guests over 95kg — confirm current rates with the operator.
Age: 18+ to jump without restriction. Ages 16–17 can jump with written parental/guardian consent and subject to instructor’s safety assessment.
Weather: Fiji’s weather is variable. Skydive Fiji monitors conditions and may reschedule jumps for safety. Full refunds are issued for weather cancellations. Don’t plan a skydive as your only activity on a day with a tight departure window — build in flexibility.
What to wear: comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Your gear (harness, goggles) is provided and fitted on the day.
Minimum numbers: some bookings require a minimum of two people. Solo bookings — contact Skydive Fiji directly, as the team sometimes links solo visitors together.
FAQs
Is it genuinely scary?
Yes, briefly. The moment at the door is the worst of it for most people. Once you’re in freefall the fear tends to convert into something else — exhilaration, focus, or a surprisingly blank present-tense awareness. The canopy ride is almost universally described as peaceful and surreal. The fear before is the price; most people say it was worth paying.
Can I go higher than 12,000 feet?
Yes — the 14,000ft “Legend” jump is the maximum available. About 60 seconds of freefall. Same process, same equipment, same instructor format, just more of the aerial view before the door opens.
What happens if the weather isn’t good on my booked day?
Skydive Fiji will contact you to reschedule. Full refunds apply if conditions prevent the jump on a rescheduled date. This is an outdoor activity over the ocean in a tropical climate; weather variability is genuine. Free cancellation is generally available up to 24 hours before your scheduled time.
