Castaway Island Day Cruise from Denarau - Lunch, Snorkel Gear and Resort Pool
Castaway Island is exactly what it looks like in the brochures. That’s rarer than it sounds.
The island sits in the heart of the Mamanuca group — tropical rainforest rising to a green peak, white sand beaches on two sides, coral reef running off the shore and into clear water. The resort occupying it has been there for decades and knows what it’s doing. The day cruise format means you get five hours on the island with full access to resort facilities — pools, beach, snorkel gear, bars — without an overnight commitment.
What sets this apart from Fiji’s larger day cruise products is the cap: South Sea Cruises limits day visitors to 20 passengers. On a resort island, that number matters. You’re not competing for sun loungers or crowding a snorkel reef.
At a glance
- Duration: ~9 hours total (including transfers)
- On-island time: approximately 5 hours
- Catamaran travel time: close to 2 hours each way through the Mamanucas
- Day visitor cap: 20 passengers maximum
- Departs: Port Denarau Marina
- Operated by: South Sea Cruises (Fiji’s major marine operator, 2024 Inbound & Transport Operator Gold Winner)
Getting there
Coach transfers run from most Nadi, Wailoaloa, and Denarau hotels to Port Denarau Marina — they depart approximately 75 minutes before the vessel, so your day starts earlier than the printed departure time. Confirm your exact hotel pickup time when you book; the coaches are punctual and cannot wait.
At the marina, you board South Sea Cruises’ high-speed catamaran: air-conditioned lounge, open outer viewing decks, free Wi-Fi onboard, and a licensed bar. The ride through the Mamanucas takes roughly 90 minutes to two hours depending on routing and resort drop-offs along the way. The catamaran does a circuit of the island group, so you’ll see Treasure, Beachcomber, Mana, and Malolo as you pass through. It’s a scenic transit, not dead time.
If you’re prone to motion sickness: take medication before boarding (not once you’re moving), choose a mid-ship seat, and keep your gaze on the horizon or the islands rather than a phone screen.
On the island
Castaway Island Resort has been refined over many years for exactly this kind of day. You’ll find two freshwater swimming pools (one adults-only with a swim-up bar), two restaurants, three bars, a beach volleyball court, tennis courts, and free snorkel gear for all guests. The snorkelling runs straight off the beach — reviewers consistently mention baby blacktip reef sharks and rays visible within minutes of entering the water.
The island’s two beaches give you options for shade and sun throughout the day. The rainforest interior is small and walkable; you’re never more than a few minutes from either beach.
Lunch is included — either buffet or à la carte at the resort’s discretion on the day. Multiple guests note it surprises them: better than expected for a day cruise meal, served at the beachside restaurant with the water visible.
Kids Club (ages approximately 3–12) is available for an additional charge if you’re travelling with young children who want structured activities.
Motorised watersports (windsurfers, catamarans) are available for an extra fee. Non-motorised gear (kayaks, paddleboards) is included.
Spa massages are bookable on the island; if this is on your list, arrange it early in the day rather than waiting.
Return
The catamaran swings back through the Mamanucas picking up guests from the other resorts, so the return trip is slightly longer than the outbound. This is worth knowing upfront — a reviewer flagged it as unexpected. It is scenic but it does add time. Budget the full 9-hour day rather than 7.
Coach transfers back to your hotel operate from Port Denarau. If you miss the coach, you’ll need to arrange your own transport back at your own cost.

FAQs
Is Castaway Island the same as the Cast Away film location?
No — and this confusion comes up in reviews regularly. Castaway Island Resort is a long-established resort in the Mamanuca group. The Tom Hanks film Cast Away (2000) was filmed on Monuriki (also called Modriki), a separate uninhabited island nearby. If the film location is your priority, look at tours specifically advertising Monuriki.
Can I just use the pool all day?
Yes, entirely. Several travellers choose this specifically for the adults-only swim-up bar pool and a genuinely lazy beach day without any snorkelling obligation. The 20-visitor cap means pool space is not an issue.
How rough is the boat crossing?
Variable. The Mamanuca crossing is generally calmer than open-ocean passages, but wind and swell days can make it bumpy. If you’re sensitive, take medication before leaving the hotel.
Is 20 passengers really the limit?
That’s the South Sea Cruises limit for day visitors to Castaway specifically. It’s a meaningfully small number — you’ll share the island with resort guests and staff, but you won’t be in a crowd.
Operated by South Sea Cruises. Departs Port Denarau Marina daily.
