The reverse commute is the best part: you ride up to the Nausori Highlands on an ATV, visit Nawaqadamu Village for kava and cultural time, and then fly back over the coastline in a helicopter. The views from the return flight—highland ridges falling away to flat cane fields and then the turquoise Mamanuca Islands—are the kind of thing people describe long after the rest of a Fiji holiday has blurred.

It runs in a small group (typically up to ~6), combines genuine outdoor adventure with a culturally grounded village stop, and finishes with an aerial perspective most visitors to Nadi never see.

At a glance

  • Duration: ~3–4 hours
  • Group size: small (often listed up to ~6)
  • Ages: 5–80 (as listed)
  • Core experience: guided ATV ride → Nawaqadamu Village kava ceremony → scenic helicopter return
  • Minimum passengers: commonly 2 to operate—confirm if booking solo
  • Sunday availability: often limited or unavailable due to village/community schedules—confirm your date before booking
  • Base: New Town Road, Wailoaloa, near Wailoaloa Beach Resort
  • Transfers: free pickup/drop-off in the Denarau–Nadi Airport corridor; paid transfers from Coral Coast and Lautoka

How the tour runs

1) Meet at base + safety briefing

At the Wailoaloa base (or hotel pickup if arranged): paperwork, safety briefing, and a short test ride. Tell the guide your riding experience level honestly—the small group size allows the pace to be set for everyone.

2) ATV ride to the Nausori Highlands

Out through Nadi Town—past the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, the South Pacific’s largest Hindu temple—and then off-road: cane fields, red-dirt highland tracks, and pine forest. Dry season means dust; wet season means mud. Both are fun. A viewpoint stop with Mamanuca views and a snack is typical.

3) Nawaqadamu Village — kava ceremony

You’ll arrive at the village for a traditional welcome and kava ceremony. The sevusevu (gift-giving ceremony) opens the visit with yaqona root as the customary offering. The kava is prepared in a tanoa (wooden bowl) and served in a bilo (coconut shell cup). The protocol: one soft clap before receiving, “Bula!” before drinking, drain in one go if you can, then three claps with the group.

Dress modestly for the village—covered shoulders and knees. Follow your guide’s lead.

Some departures include a short school visit when open (weekdays, term time). If school is closed, more time at the village.

4) Helicopter return to Nadi (~10–15 minutes)

After the village, a short transfer to the landing area. The flight covers the ground you’ve been riding—compressed into 10–15 minutes of aerial views over the highlands, cane flats, and coastline.

Before boarding: Secure all loose items—hats, scarves, sunglasses—before approaching the aircraft. Follow crew instructions on approach direction and timing. Stay low under the rotor arc. Weather can affect flying; ask about the policy when booking.

After landing near Nadi, a transfer returns you to your hotel or the base.

FAQs

Is the helicopter the main event?

No—the helicopter is the finale (~10–15 minutes). The tour is roughly 80% ATV adventure and village time. Book it for the combined experience, not just the flight.

Is there a weight limit?

Helicopter operators have per-passenger and payload limits. Confirm with the operator before booking, especially for passengers over 100kg or larger groups.

Can I book as a solo traveller?

Often yes, but confirm—the minimum is commonly stated as 2 passengers. Solo travellers may join a small group or be offered an alternative date.
