Castaway Island Resort, Fiji: Mamanuca Island Escape
Castaway Island Resort has been doing the Mamanuca private-island experience for decades, which gives it something that newer properties often lack: a quiet confidence in what it is. There’s no gimmick here, no elaborate theme, no trendy beach-club overlay. Just a properly run island resort with beachfront bures, a calm lagoon, good water activities, and a kitchen that takes locally sourced seafood seriously.
The name, of course, is a nod to the 2000 Tom Hanks film of the same name — parts of which were filmed on nearby Monuriki Island. You’ll likely hear about that from your boat driver on the way over. But Castaway Island (known locally as Qalito Island) has its own identity, and the resort doesn’t lean on the film connection too heavily.
Getting there
The most common way is by high-speed catamaran from Port Denarau — the trip takes around 45 minutes, which is short enough to be pleasant but long enough that you feel properly offshore by the time you arrive. Seaplane transfers are also available if you want to make the arrival part of the experience; the aerial view of the Mamanuca Islands from a seaplane is one of those moments that justifies the extra cost.
The resort is close enough to Nadi that it works well as a short escape — even a single night gives you that genuine island feeling.
What the stay involves
Accommodation ranges from beachfront bures (the traditional thatched Fijian bungalow style, done properly here) to garden bures set further back in tropical vegetation. The beachfront options are worth the premium — waking up to the sound of the lagoon with nothing between you and the water but a stretch of sand is not something you forget.
The lagoon itself is calm and clear, ideal for snorkelling and safe for children. Kayaks and paddleboards are available, and the reef just offshore offers good visibility and a healthy mix of coral and reef fish. The dive centre can take certified divers to sites around the Mamanuca group.
The kids’ club program is well-organised and genuinely popular with families — supervised activities during the day mean parents can take a genuine break.
Dining
The restaurant focuses on Fijian and Pacific flavours with a practical international base — expect fresh reef fish and seafood alongside grilled meats and solid vegetarian options. The bar is well stocked and the sunset views from the beachside seating justify a sundowner drink even if you don’t normally bother with them.
Who Castaway suits best
This is particularly good for families with children of mixed ages, couples who want a private-island setting that’s genuinely accessible rather than remote and logistically complicated, and anyone making their first visit to a Mamanuca island resort. It’s a reliable, well-managed property that delivers exactly what it promises.
